Unfortunately, the contacts in our handlebar buttons do get corroded. Anthony gave you the "fix", but since Radio Shack has closed just about all of their free-standing businesses, it might be hard to find locally. Depending on where you are, you may have to order Contact Cleaner online.
I used to have the same problem periodically with my handlebar controls. Now, about once a month, I will operate each button ... repeatedly, with the ignition OFF. Since I've started doing this, I no longer have any issues. I hope this is your problem and it's nothing more serious.

I had a reverse switch that was sticking to the point that I was going to have to replace it. I had tried CRC, WD 40 and a couple of others that I will not mention. Finally read on another forum about DeoxIT Fader F5. It lubricates and protects plastic-to-plastic and plastic-to-metal. One application and the switch was working as good as new. It is evidently utilized for stringed musical instruments. I found some at a local music store and would highly recommend it.
