OK -- New Plan for the weekend ride Friday 1/13 (How can we miss? Friday 13th!)

The Cranes are here -- The AZ winter population of Sandhill Cranes is stunning, and now is the perfect time to get a view of these enormous birds in great concentrations. The best viewing is at the Whitewater Draw area, southeast of Tombstone, during the mid-day hours from 11 - 1PM or so.

Roll-out Friday 0900 from Catalina K.
2nd Meetup 1000 at the SW corner of the Hwy 83 exit from I-10 (Meet at the Lamarr Cobb memorial).

Route: Catalina K to I-10, South at Vail for Sonoita (Pick up 2nd group) and go East toward Tombstone. The Sonoita route shows 20 mins longer, so likely return via Willcox.

Probably want to find a sandwich takeout along the way (check at Tombstone, or bring something of your own) -- there is nothing out there at the refuge (no water, no food), so bring what you need!

I'll bring some binoculars, but if you have a favorite pair, bring them. Also a bird book -- I'll try to remember to bring my Sibley.

Let me know if you are in, or have questions.
Hope to see some of you there!

JB
No responses. I assume no one is going so I'm leaving early. If you are coming, call me (the phone answers on the bike) 480.326.0412. Will check by the meetup point on the way by, approx 0900

Hi JB,
Sorry I didn't check the forum in time to catch the info on this ride. Which is why email blast work better for me. As it was, I met up with the Green Valley group at Sahuarita and Houghton on Thursday on our way to Tombstone. They are still independent with no desire to join anything at this point.
Saturday was a ride with E.W. Pima Pioneers to Marana. I actually had an opening on Friday.

I'm working on a distribution list and hope to get the ride and event blast going soon.

Hi, Randy -- Great to hear from you.

Whatever works for the group is fine with me. Nothing is really trouble-free, but if the group wants an email blast that's fine.

The coming weekend looks like good weather and no schedule conflicts (other than NFL playoffs). Any ideas for an interesting ride?

I just noticed that Cruiseman has released a new vid comparing the 2023 DCT to the original 2018. A few differences -- some add-ons like fog lights are now standard. Drive train and suspension appear to be mostly unchanged. No adaptive cruise yet.

If you don't want the DCT, the standard (6-spd) manual is still available. I have the DCT. I was a little reluctant at first, but with 25K miles of everything from rain to winding mountains, I have to say the bike usually shifts better than I do. In cases where I know it won't do as well, the manual override is a thumb-flick away.

I'd like to do a ride to the North Rim to see Cape Royal and Angels' Window. Probable side trip on the way home to take the Navajo truck out to Antelope Canyon.

At this point it's planning stages, and exact dates and routes are open for discussion. Approximate mileages, overnight destinations, and other details are dependent one who is interested.

Rough Outline: Mid-August or so.
  • Day 1: Catalina K to Kanab 475 miles.
    • Overnight Red Canyon Cabins, Kanab. Approx $75/night
  • Day 2: Leave early for Cape Royal
    • Approx 90 mile through the pine forest to the Cape Royal turn off,
    • A couple of hrs taking pix, drinking coffee,
    • Ride on down to N Rim Lodge and lower overlook
    • Fill up at Lodge and turn for Kanab
    • Overnight Kanab Red Canyon Cabins
  • Day 3 Overnight Page
    • Leisurely breakfast in Kanab, head for Page mid morning
    • Take afternoon Navajo tour to Antelope Canyon
  • Day 4 Turn it for Tucson, riding hard. Home by late afternoon. 400 miles
First and 4th days are 475 / 400 mile days, so hard riding. 2-3 not bad. Actual milages not establisted, but 200 or so for day 2 and 150 for day 3 are approximate.

Thoughts and ideas are welcome and encouraged --
Speak up, let's talk!

Saturday 1/28 Wing'd Rider meeting? Is this still on? Some confirmation or an announcement would be good -- I'd hate to ride an hr across town to find no one else there.

0800 Golden Corral, 22nd W of Alvernon.

Friday Ride:

I'm thinking Richie's cafe at Ryan Airfield, followed by a run up Kitt Peak for a look back at the city.

Route -- Twin Peaks to Sandario and straight S down to the cafe. This avoids Friday morning freeway traffic and gives us a pleasant ride through the desert on the west side.

Kitt Peak is closed, but the road up is a public highway, so we should be able to ride up (Anyway, last time I was out there the gate was open). There are no services open, so gas and potties need to be taken care of at 3-Points, but the view is incredible from up there.

Catalina riders roll out from K at 0730. Others meet us at Richies 0830 (9698 W Ajo).

Reply All if you are coming so we know how many and who to look for. First to arrive, please have the restaurant staff set up tables for us (max 6).

Comments & Questings, please Reply:All -- others may have the same thoughts.

Richie's was good -- Sad to find the gate at Kitt Peak actually locked. Pretty morning for a ride --

<Randy Wasser> --Please post this ride to the Wing'd Rider group -- They are welcome to come with us!>

Wing'd Riders -- You are invited to this ride next Friday morning, joining the Eagle Crest Riders group --

Judy's and The Eagles this week -- Haven't been up in several weeks, and long-range forecast suggests there might be enough thermal action to encourage them to fly a bit -- At the least, they will be well into nesting activities.
  • Meetup: Circle K in Catalina. 15935 N Oracle Rd, across the street from Tractor Supply
  • Rollout -- 0800 -- Bladders empty, Tanks full, Kickstands up.
  • Breakfast stop - Judy's Cookhouse, Globe (5412 S Russell Rd, Globe, AZ 85501)
After a late bkfst, we'll go up to Roosevelt Dam and see if we can spot the bald eagles that nest there each year.

Homeward, riders can choose to return one of the following:
  • 77 (the way we went up)
  • 177 (Superior to Kearny)
  • 79 through Florence
Let us know whether to expect you -- Reply this email

The only reply I have was a No (gracias, Randy W). We will wait until 0800. If you are later than that, catch us at breakfast at Judy's.

Will post next week's ride Monday. Plan on a Saturday ride unless some members of the group speak up and request a Saturday. Leaning toward a Crane ride down past Tombstone, but suggestions are welcome.

Pima Air Museum Vettes and Jets:

Next Saturday: 2/18
-- https://www.facebook.com/events/5769851713068212?ref=newsfeed

Possible as a meetup, if some of us are interested.

They are expecting 7 Vettes. Cars will be inside the main hanger, where the entrance is.

Adult entry is $20, $17 for seniors. (I keep a pass out there -- well worth it!)

Reply here to keep the conversation together
.
Vettes and Jets cancelled. No indication of why and the museum is still a great day out, but no Vettes this time.

Judy's and The Eagles --
  • 0830 Catalina Circle K (15935 N Oracle Rd, 85739) KUBE
  • Arrive Judy's approx 1000
  • After breakfast, optional ride to Roosevelt Dam to see if the eagles are up
  • Routes home are rider's choice -- via Florence (79), Winkleman (177) or Globe (70)..
Ride notes:
  • Riders coming from South and East sides may wish to consider coming out the freeway as follows to avoid crosstown traffic and stop lights (GMaps preferred routing):
    • Exit Orange Grove East
    • N on Mona Lisa
    • E on Magee
    • N on La Cholla
    • E on Lambert
    • N on Oracle
  • K is on the West side of Oracle, so U-Turns needed, however the other station in town is small and often has large groups meeting. If you wish to wait across the street at Tractor Supply, text me and we'll swing through there (480.326.0412)

  • Forecast is good, particularly early in the day. We'll be at the dam late enough that the birds may be up and soaring a bit.

  • There are Forest Service facilities at the dam (no water/pit toilets) but they have always been clean and stocked in the past. Wives and girlfriends are welcome.

  • If you are running late, call or text and we'll wait a few minutes. If you miss us, come on and look for us at the store at the 177 intersection (Winkleman) or Judy's in Globe (Judy's COOK HOUSE, 5412 Russell Rd, Globe, AZ 85501)
Please reply to this email to let us know about how many riders -- I'll call ahead if more than 6

See you Saturday!
