2022 October Chapter Meeting Minutes

Hello Chapter A Riders. For those of you who couldn’t make the October meeting, here are some topics covered. Please check out our Chapter A newsletter.

District Topics
  • Ray talked about our KY District Directors reviewing our options after GWRRA closing. Our options being to join Wind’D Riders, Eagle Wings Motorcycle Association (EWMA) or staying independent.
  • Our District Directors have decided to go with Wing’D Riders. Rick Cridlin has put together an excellent email detailing the differences between our choices. If you would like a copy of this email please reach out to Ray at Diresctor@ChapterA.org and he will forward the email to you. Other KY chapters are still reviewing this information to decide. As for Chapter A, we have agreed to join Wing’D Riders as well.
  • We talked about the KY District BLAST that was held in Danville, KY at The Showroom and how great the facilities were for this event.
  • We talked about how hot it was at the BLAST and how thankful we were to be able to get in out of the heat. We discussed our concern with the current plan for the 2023 Ride-In (June 2nd and 3rd) to be held at the Jenny Wiley State Park outdoors and the possibility of no-where to go to get out of the heat.
  • We discussed our concern about all rooms at Jenny Wiley State Park already being full and the next available hotels being 8 miles away. There is a lot of concern in the Chapter about next year’s location.
Chapter Topics
  • We will continue to meet the second Saturday of each month at Roosters at 11am-1pm.
  • We had a good turnout for the meeting with 21 people in attendance from Chapter A and 4 guests from Chapter C. Chapter C got the traveling plaque.
  • At this year’s BLAST we had a rider have an accident on one of the rides. From the things we learned in responding to this accident we intend to have a class to review the process and responsibilities of the ride captain and tail gunner and what assistance they may need from other riders in the group.
  • Since we no longer have GWRRA event insurance coverage we have decided to implement a Motorcycle Ride Waiver Release and Consent form for riders to sign to cover them for the entire calendar year for Chapter A events/rides.
  • Our ride coordinator Don Price talked about lessons learned from our recent Branson, MO trip.
  • All routes were planned on Garmin Basecamp and transferred to a Garmin GPS. Once transferred you need to zoom in on the GPS device map to verify the route has stayed the same. Especially the final turns near your destination. Otherwise, you might get a tour of a Walmart parking lot.
  • When providing starting/meeting locations you should always include the name of the business, gas station or restaurant. We had an issue where the address manually input to a Garmin GPS led our members to a different meeting point (gas station) than the one other members were located. Half the members were at a Pilot gas station (correct location) and other half at a 5-Star (gas station, incorrect location) even though the address was correct in the Garmin GPS. If you input the address in Google Maps, it took you to the correct gas station.
  • Garmin Zumo XT GPS settings. If you have no u-turns allowed in your settings and are out in the country and miss a shaping point and let your GPS recalculate you may find the GPS could take you on a huge cross-country loop to get you back to the shaping point instead of bypassing it. The only way you will notice is if you zoom way out on the map screen where you can see the route and see the loop.
  • We had six days in Branson, MO for rides. Having one location worked out well as we were able to shuffle rides around on different days depending on when we could get reservations into different shows such as the Showboat Branson Belle for their dinner show. We also decided to make the day (Friday) before our return ride as a free day so people could sightsee on their own around the area. This worked out very well as we were able to go to downtown Branson for breakfast and lunch and walk around to local stores and visit a local festival taking place.
  • It was great not having to pack up every night for the next days long ride to another hotel. We were able to sit around and play card games and learn a new domino game called Mexican Train.
  • Just about everyone who had a trailer brought it along for the trip and this was really beneficial with respect to what we could bring or take home that our better halves might buy. The hotel (Carriage House Inn) was a nice hotel that had the perfect place for all of us to chain up our trailers. They are very friendly to motorcycles.
  • Something we might consider for next year is to have maybe two destinations where we spend 2-3 days at a location and then have one of our ride days be the ride to the second location for another 2-3 days before heading back.
  • Weather was perfect for the trip. Rode through some short rain showers 2 or 3 times that lasted maybe 3-5 minutes on the way to Branson. We had a downpour about 30 minutes after we arrived, but everyone was in their rooms by this time. No other rain the entire trip. Days were mid 50’s to 60’s in the morning starting out and then mid 80’s in late afternoon.
  • Since we have decided to go with Wing’D Riders some members had already joined the group to see what it was all about. Wing’D Riders has their Forums/Chapters section up and running so information will be double posted in our Facebook Chapter A group and on Wing’D Riders so see how well their interface works for getting our information out to people. At this time Wing’D Riders will only allow you to see the Wing’D Rider Sub Boards (Chapter Message Boards) if you are a member of Wing’D Riders. A forum discussion will be started within Wing’D Rider message boards to have this opened to non-members as well. All other forums on Wing’D Rider are open to non-members to see but you can’t create or post on message boards until you become a member.
